Guidelines for Principals: Including LGBT students in School Policies

The guidelines are designed to give you tools and inspiration to initiate or strengthen your work with diversity and equal treatment at your school. The guidelines aim to assist you in working with equal treatment as a comprehensive approach to school development and to ensuring the school environment is a positive and safe place for students and staff, including LGBT students and staff.
The rationale for including these guidelines is that the effort of improving equal treatment and equal opportunities in schools and in the youth sector should be carried out comprehensively led by the school management and supported by the staff. In other words, this is not a training of teachers section, but rather a hands on for school management to work with equal treatment on all grounds of discrimination and particularly on sexual orientation and gender identity. As an introduction to the field and particularly working with LGBT issues in a school context from a human rights perspective, please also see the “Teacher’s Guide" on this website.
